GP Week : Issue 207
Former team owner Flavio Briatore is to be a member of a new working group charged with spicing up the show in Formula 1. The disgraced former Benetton and Renault owner, who was barred from participating in the sport for his role in fixing the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, has been included in the group, set up by Bernie Ecclestone. Mercedes-Benz boss Toto Wolff is another member of the group. Part of the reason that the group is being set up now was the pitiful attendance at the German GP, in spite of the fact that a German driver, Nico Rosberg was leading the World Championship, in a Mercedes- Benz, during the build-up to the event, which he eventually won. “A couple of guys will sit together [to work out what to do], because it’s difficult to do when you invite everybody and come up with priorities and solutions,” said Wolff. “We’ll probably get you guys [i.e., the media] involved to avoid the situation last time when you found our ideas really s***! So that’s the procedure.” He added: “Bernie expressed a wish to discuss with teams about how we can improve the show of Formula 1. “It wasn’t a negative meeting, we have seen some great racing and some packed race tracks, at Austria, Montreal and Silverstone. “But then we have seen smaller audiences here and at Hockenheim – why is that? So we’re going to come together and come up with ideas.” C M Y CM MY CY CMY K 2014_KV3_GPWeek_A5_FA_OUTLINED.pdf 1 24/7/14 4:00 pm F1 >>> nEWs fLAviO'S bAck
