In fact, the speed sector analysis, confirmed also by the speed trap data, shows us that Alonso and Raikkonen were among the slowest cars on the grid, in favour of sharper behavior of the car in the tight corners of this track. As we wrote at the top of this article, the race result was exactly the opposite of what the technical data show us, in terms of top performance of the cars. This sort of eventful race, in terms of the real competition we saw on the track, was simply down to external factors rather than sheer performance. Aerodynamics, in fact in conditions similar to this race, has a reduced impact on cars’ performance, and at the same time even the power units performance, has a reduced weight in the economy of the race. Mercedes was the real loser, being defeated by the technically weaker forces of Red Bull and Ferrari. One sign of this defeat may be well be represented by the controversial team order, radioed to Hamilton, to let Rosberg pass. Contravening this order, but following just his racing driver instinct, Hamilton refused to lift off, an action that in our opinion was justified by the stupidity of the order itself. It is in our opinion inconceivable that a team having both drivers first and second in the drivers’ championship, would ask one of the two to lift off, because they were not racing directly each other during the race. If that had happened, the outcome of the race for Mercedes would have seen Rosberg and Hamilton swapping their final positions! This order represented exactly something a team should never do, while at the same time showing how, on the opposite side of the scale, the brave tyre strategy of Ferrari paid dividends with both drivers. Now there is a long break before F1 races again in Belgium at Spa, in four weeks time, so this race represents a curtain closing on the first act of this Championship. It is fitting, then, that at a track often considered boring, the drivers themselves, rather than outright technical superiority, were the deciding factor. Hungaroring, take a bow.
